Pedestal Project - Adam Smith

Adam Smith
Pedestal
Steel
12" x 12" x 28"

My pedestal references prototypical classic pedestals, the kind that might be a miniature Corinthian column with a small marble bust on it, but is built from an unlikely material.  Steel plates and beams bring to mind building or bridge construction - they act as practical and effective supports for the visible and important parts (such as a road or the usable interior of a building), without calling attention to themselves.  In the setting of an art gallery, such an absurdly overbuilt pedestal would have the opposite effect.  It is extremely cumbersome and unfinished, and would stand out by being clearly excessive for holding any object that could actually fit on top of it.  If actually used at a pedestal, this absurdity could be accentuated by displaying on top of it a very delicate piece of art, or it could be reinforced by supporting an entire car.

  1. That would be amazing to actually follow through with that wacky idea of parking a car on top of this pedestal.
